Mangrove Matters PH
Mangrove Matters PH (MMPH) is a youth-led environmental organization that mainstreams marine conservation, with a primary focus on mangrove forests and their inhabitants, and coastal communities who are among the most vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis. Through advocacy, active engagement, policy lobbying, education, and nature-based solutions, we work to raise awareness and take concrete steps to promote the sustainable management of these invaluable natural resources.
Our Actions
Science Communication
We at MMPH are champions of mangrove conservation in the Philippines, leading science communication efforts through educational discussions, engaging events, and powerful social media campaigns. Beyond raising awareness, we take bold action by participating in global conservation dialogues and keeping watch over improper mangrove planting practices by both government and corporate entities.
Policy Lobbying
We leverage strategic advocacy to drive meaningful environmental policy changes. Our campaigns have directly resulted in establishing 11 new protected areas in the Philippines. By mobilizing citizens, engaging senators, and collaborating with environmental organizations, we push critical legislation like the National Coastal Greenbelt and Integrated Coastal Management acts to strengthen legal protections for our coastal ecosystems.
Nature-based Solutions
We drive conservation through hands-on nature-based solutions, focusing on mangrove ecosystem restoration. Our work includes organizing mangrove planting activities, conducting nursery management workshops, and undertaking large-scale restoration projects. Through strategic local, national, and international partnerships, we contribute to coastal protection and biodiversity conservation.
Our Story
Mangrove Matters PH was born in 2020 from the collective vision of marine biology students in Negros Oriental, Philippines. What started as a science communication initiative quickly evolved into a nationwide movement dedicated to mangrove conservation. Our inaugural year marked a pivotal moment when we conducted our first fundraising and mangrove planting effort, partnering with environmental organizations to transform our academic passion into tangible action.
As our mission expanded, we opened membership nationwide, creating a diverse network of conservationists from different regions across the Philippines. Now a proud member of the Global Mangrove Alliance, we collaborate with partners like Oceana Philippines, Wetlands International, and the East Asian Australasian Flyway Partnership. Our work extends far beyond simple planting – we actively engage in science communication, policy reforms, advocacy campaigns, and participate in national and international conferences. By working together, we are committed to restoring mangrove forests, protecting coastal communities from storm surges and erosion, and sequestering carbon dioxide to combat the climate crisis. Today, Mangrove Matters PH continues to grow, driven by our unwavering mission to nurture marine biodiversity and create sustainable environmental change.
