The First National Mangrove Youth Summit

Recognizing the role of the youth in shaping the society, it is high time to involve this sector in mangrove conservation as they will be the future leaders of the country. Furthemore, the youth sector has an active role in seeking proactive solutions on environmental conservation and combating climate change. As the inheritors of this planet, the youth are recognized as well as among the most vulnerable sectors from the climate crisis, endangering their future.
As such, Mangrove Matters PH in collaboration with Oceana Philippines, Wetlands International, One Pawikan Initiative, Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park, and the Global Mangrove Alliance - Philippines Chapter holds the First National Mangrove Youth Summit (1NMYS) to take place in Las Piñas Parañaque Wetland Park on March 24-25, 2025, in line with the celebration of the International Day of Forests on the 21st of March.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE SUMMIT ARE AS FOLLOWS:
-
Bring together youth leaders and youth partners of GMAP members from across the Philippines to foster collaboration and shared learning;
-
Contextualize the nationwide mangrove restoration efforts in the Philippines, providing an overview of the role the youth can play in achieving the goals of the Global Mangrove Alliance and how they can contribute to these efforts;
-
Educate the youth on the importance of mangroves and empower young leaders by equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to advocate for and lead mangrove conservation initiatives in their local communities;
-
Develop a 2-year (2025-2027) youth-led campaign plan that will align with the broader goals of Global Mangrove Alliance Philippines;
-
Formally establish a youth network and create a collaborative platform for young advocates to continue working together and advancing mangrove protection efforts long after the summit.
This first-ever National Mangrove Youth Summit aims to strategize how the youth sector can actively contribute to achieving the three broad goals of the Global Mangrove Alliance Philippines: halting mangrove loss, restoring mangrove cover, and ensuring the long-term protection of mangroves. We seek to tap into the potential of the new generation for driving meaningful change in mangrove conservation efforts.
